WiTricity: Powering Your Gadget the Wireless Way

As the wireless age is already considered to be in its prime, another leap was made that will become a trend to all our gizmos in coming years. The wireless craze already paved its way to input devices such as mouse and keyboard. The breed grew largely in telecommunication and transfer of data. But an unchartered territory in wireless technology is now open. Wireless power transmission will put an end to the burden of carrying extra battery for your gadget.

Since last year, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers, Intel Corp. are taking technology to the next level by transmitting electricity wirelessly. According to them, this is very much possible by making use of basic physics. Electric coils that resonate at the same frequency can transmit energy to each other at a distance. Last Thursday, they demonstrated how to make a 60-watt light bulb glow from an energy source 3 feet away. In the presentation, there is 25% loss of energy in the transit. The loss of energy in the transfer is the major challenge that the researcher have. Yet, this is already a marvelous feat and in their excitement and inspiration, it seems that draws closer and closer to reality each day.

From mobile phones, especially to portable A/V players, every drop of energy counts. If the travel will take some time, carrying extra battery is very much handy. On the other case, it is tedious to find outlets for notebook computers in the library, mall and even in classrooms. But if this advance will materialize in the near future, we will not worry anymore with our energy bars.
