It’s Already Christmas
Yesterday morning, I went to eat in Jolibee, a famous fast food restaurant here in the Philippines and I heard familiar songs that caught my attention. It made me smile because the songs that I am actually listening that time were some famous jolly Christmas songs. As always, because it’s already September, here in the Philippines, it’s Christmas time already.
Christmas season in the Philippines is very very long. September marks the beginning of it because it is ‘ber’-month (Months ending with ‘ber’). As early as this time, you can already hear Christmas carols all over the place, from public transportation, offices, restaurants and even in the radio. It is also funny because the season is also expected to extend up to February of the next year as Christmas decors are not yet removed even up to that time.
But this year, there is one thing that will surely affect the mood of Christmas here in the Philippines. It is the upcoming fight of the Filipino pride Manny Pacquiao to legendary fighter, Golden Boy, Oscar dela Hoya on December 6. Everybody here stops whenever Pacquaio has a fight and this was considered one of his greatest bout. On the Christmas eve, as friends and relatives celebrated, the result of the match will surely dominate the talks and chats.
All in all, whatever the result of the fight between Pacman and Golden Boy, though the nation’s economy is not favorable and even the problem of poverty is unlikely to be solved, Philippines will celebrate Christmas the longest because what matters most is the hope, love and faith we share will never end and it will continue until the end of days.
