Which MP3 download sites should you use?
I’ve been rather smugly getting rid of CDs over the last few months.MP3s, being more portable and just as good sound quality, are clearly a much better idea than carting a load of albeit light discs around.So in combination, my unlimited MP3 download service and one of the cheapest portable MP3 players, I’m getting great value, up to the minute entertainment system.
But in order to be small enough to fit on even the cheapest portable MP3 player, these files have to be compressed from the source file.The result is lower quality sound.
Alas, the sound of these marvellously small MP3s just doesn’t sound that good on my MP3 player when connected to my new hifi.And although I’d been downloading a lot of music from Napster and putting it on to my cheapest MP3 player, the sound I got would have been much better had I stuck to CDs.
Fortunately, all is not lost.I found a site which compares different music downloading services and shows you which ones have which download capability.If I was using a higher quality download service with a better bitrate, I’d get a much better sound. iTunes will actually give you 320kps on some files, which return a great sound even on my high-spec hifi.
Below are some of the alternatives to Napster, and the bitrate you can download:
- Walmart mp3 – 256kps
- Anthology – 320kps
- Amazon – 256kps
- Zune marketplace – 192kps
- Beatsource/Beatport – 320kps
- Rhapsody – up to 160 kps
So if you want to stick to an all-you-can-eat download service, Napster is still probably the best value with the best bitrate for this type of service. But if you’re willing to pay per music file downloaded, then iTunes is well worth the investment for those high bit-rate songs. The sound will sound just as good, provided you’re using good headphones on one of the cheapest portable MP3 player.
