Does File Extension Matters?
This is a bugging question. What is the use of file extensions? File Extensions can be easily renamed, deleted and changed into a certain way that it is undistinguishable from its original state because it even fools the computer and changed its icon for some files. Also, there are some file extensions that can be used for several application, however one file cannot be used for other program that requires the same file extension. An example of this is File Extension BPD. This file extension can be used for different kinds of program. Actually, one programmer can make another software and can choose again to decide that it will use File Extension BPD or other extensions that are common and it will not make things worse.
In this, I think here are some reasons why File Extensions Matters.
- For naming convention – When I was taking my computer programming subject. My professor always remind us to use naming convention to identify variables so that we can easily distinguish it. And in this, I think, file extension will help us recognize one file from the other.
- Sense of Uniqueness – In the beginning, there is only little number of computer programs that are commercially and widely used. So in this, I think, to make the files for a certain program to be unique, they used file extensions.
Today, there are already many different programs so it is quite acceptable that there will be some programs that will use the same file extensions. However, as much as possible, programmers must use unique file extensions for their programs to minimize conflict. I think is it stupid for a programmer to use .doc for a gaming software. In this, if you are having problem to your computer and there are some file extensions that cannot be read even though it is common, it is best to scan your registry with errors.
