Focusing on the PlayStation Eye

Recently, at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo conference, Sony plugged what they call the Sony Playstation Eye. Sensing deja vu? You are thinking back to Sony’s EyeToy, a device for the Playstation 2 that pioneered the identification of the real time movements of the player. The Eye builds upon this feature in certain fantastic functions, but they are not completely original ones. That being said, it is increasingly hard to know just how much this product will really influence the console world, if it does.

For any who didn’t see E3, perhaps the leading functions of Sony Playstation Eye is the motion sensing. Just how sensing is accomplished is through the tracking of the sensitive orb at the tips of the remote created for the Eye. Sony’s representatives proceeded to offer a live demonstration of the feature’s capabilities, using the remote to correspond with a 3D interface within the TV screen and showing how the equipmentcould be integrated in categories like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and even action. All movement the player performs with the remote is projected onscreen with one to one precision.

However, doesn’t that sound somewhat familiar? During last year’s E3, Nintendo performed the exact same presentation utilizing their Wii Motion Plus peripheral. It too recognises and mirrors actions at 1 to 1 precision. The one major distinction between the separate peripherals is that the Sony Playstation Eye demands an updated version of the EyeToy camera to track the remotes, whereas Nintendo’s Wii Motion Plus hooks up to an unseen sensor bar wirelessly. If anything, Sony’s latest attempt seems less ahead compared to Nintendo’s technology of a year ago.

Although following in the shadow of readily available features, the Eye stays an excellent offering of hardware that’s certain to please most owners of the PlayStation 3. Though it won’t drastically alter the realm of game playing as a whole, the Sony Playstation Eye accomplishes a boost for Sony’s empire, and should perhaps help them recover in terms of innovation.
