Over half a decade ago, Nintendo jump started the portable videogame market by introducing the DS. Hailed as a massively popular machine, the DS offered a cutting edge design, great games and is responsible for introducing gaming to a wider fan base. Since that point, Nintendo have produced a number of updates and new models, but which of these different Nintendo DS models is right for gamers?

Regardless of being the oldest and most outdated console, the original DS remains popular. New models are not sold in shops, but many are sold for cheap costs online, which adds to their fame. The original model is also able to recognise the earliest incarnations of games which are no longer available to the later models. If gamers can get past the size and weight, this device is great for those on the cheap, the most cost effective of the different Nintendo DS models.

Up next, the DS Lite didn’t provide a great departure from the functions of the original, but as the moniker says it reduced the size and weight considerably. Curiously, the DS Lite also has the best battery time of all the different Nintendo DS models, even judged against the more modern ones. The DS Lite remains generally well-liked for people that like less expensive consoles and are not worried about the extra features of the DSi.

The Nintendo DSi produced the most outstanding change to the features. Throwing in tons of awesome new multimedia capabilities, including game downloads and twin cameras. Again, all the functions of the first DS were built upon, with the screen and sound being augmented. The DSi remains the most technically impressive of the different Nintendo DS models, and now the hottest.

And with the DSi XL arriving soon, there’s lots of choice when it comes to it. The earlier devices offer lesser features and shine, but are easily affordable and still provide brilliant gaming. However, if you are after multimedia capacities and increased bang for your buck, the later models are a sound investment. One point is certain though, all the different Nintendo DS models provide a great gaming choice!
